What is the difference between clear glass and ultra-clear glass?

What is the difference between clear glass and ultra-clear glass?

The primary difference between clear (standard float) glass and ultra-clear glass lies in their iron oxide content and the resulting visual clarity. Standard clear glass has a naturally greenish or bluish tint, especially noticeable when looking at the glass edge-on or when stacked. This coloration is caused by iron oxide, an impurity present in the raw materials used in manufacturing. Ultra-clear glass, often known by brand names like Low-Iron glass, is manufactured with significantly reduced iron oxide content. This fundamental change in composition eliminates the greenish tint, resulting in a product that is virtually colorless and offers superior transparency. The practical effect is that ultra-clear glass allows more light to pass through (higher light transmittance) with minimal distortion and color alteration, making objects viewed through it appear truer to their actual color. Consequently, ultra-clear glass is the premium choice for applications where aesthetic perfection and optical clarity are critical, such as in display cases, high-end furniture, interior partitions, and solar panels, where maximum light transmission is essential for efficiency. Clear glass remains a cost-effective solution for standard windows and general glazing where the slight tint is acceptable.
